Magpie & Jay is developing a range of designs inspired by British plants and birds, the Arts and Crafts movement, textiles and geometry, especially the tessellations discovered by the 2020 Nobel prizewinner Roger Penrose.
Magpie and jay cards
Cards based on four tessellating watercolours of the Eurasian Jay (garrulus glandarius) and the Eurasian Magpie (pica pica), with adjusted colours. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, these are our flagship designs.

Geometric greetings cards based on ‘kite’ and ‘dart’ tessellations discovered by 2020 Nobel prizewinner Sir Roger Penrose and inspired by Jacobean art and British wildllife.

Art and poetry cards
We offer here a selection of larger cards (A5). The poem Just is an answer to Rudyard Kipling’s If, with more focus on positives, and on achieving your personal best without being Superman or woman.

FaBRIC of the church cards
These five cards are based on original fabric and paper collages made for sale at Prinknash Abbey monastery shop and are inspired by the poem The Church-Floore by the allegorical poet George Herbert.

Cloths of Heaven cross cards
These cards are based on original collages made for sale at Prinknash Abbey monastery shop, using imagery, materials and textures inpired by the W B Yeats poem The Cloths of Heaven.

Dream of the Rood cards
These designs are inspired by the Anglo-Saxon poem The Dream of the Rood from the Vercelli Manuscript. A combination of traditional wood engraving and digital colour have been used.

Occasion cards
Magpies at Home! (left) is one of the designs used in our flagship Magpie & Jay patterns. The magpies in their nest send a ‘Happy New Home!’ message. Consider the Birds (right) features a cross combining the magpie and jay watercolours with popular a quote from the Gospels.
